학교소개

1881년 던디에 설립된 유니버시티칼리지(University College)에서 출발해 1883년 문을 열었으며, 

초대학장으로 윌리엄 피터슨(William Peterson)이 취임했다. 개교 당시 영어영문학·현대사학부, 철학부, 수학·자연철학부,화학부, 공학·제도학부의 5개 학부가 개설되었다. 1890년 세인트앤드루스 대학(University of St. Andrews)과긴밀한 관계를 맺기 시작했으며, 1897년 세인트앤드루스 대학에 편입되었다.

 

1967년 왕실의 칙허를 받아 던디 대학이 설립되었으며 독립한 이래 발전을 거듭하며 세계적으로 인정받는 연구기관으로 성장했다. 

1990년대 예술대학, 간호대학 등을 통합하며 규모를 확대했고, 2001년 던디교육대학을 통합해 교육·사회사업학부를 신설했다.

2000년대 많은 건물을 새로 짓거나 오래된 건물을 보수하며 대대적으로 캠퍼스를 재단장했다.

현재 인문·사회과학대학, 예술·과학·공학대학, 생명과학대학, 의학·치의학·간호대학 등 4개 대학으로 구성되어 있고, 대학별로 다양한 학부 및 학과가 있다. 

특히 분자생물학, 생화학, 유전자학을 포함하는 생명과학 분야의 연구가 우수하다는 평가를 받고 있다. 

그밖에 법학, 회계학, 의학, 치의학, 예술·디자인 분야의 명성이 높다. 영국에서 유일하게 영국 법과 스코틀랜드 법 분야의 학사학위를 수여한다.
